Schools in the UK

In England, Wales and Scotland every child is aged 5-16 and in Northern Ireland aged between 4 and 16 years. In addition to mixed schools in the country, there are also separate educational institutions for boys or girls. Unlike England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, seven-year primary and four-year compulsory secondary education in Scotland is being tested for students to obtain an Education Certificate. This certificate is recognized within the United Kingdom and allows the University to have the same effect as the Level A General Education Certificate.

In the United Kingdom, public schools are divided into three groups:

- territorial schools administered and funded by local education authorities;

- voluntary schools, mainly based on religious beliefs;

- self-administered and funded schools

General secondary education

In the United Kingdom, schoolchildren complete compulsory secondary education 16 and full secondary education at the age of 18. Secondary schools - gymnasium, lyceum, college and vocational high schools have the highest logistics base. Computer technology is widely used in the teaching process.

Approximately 90 percent of middle-aged children in the country are involved in compulsory education. Students are admitted to these schools without checking their skill and level of readiness.

From the age of 16, pupils can continue their education at six-year colleges or vocational schools. In either case, a general education course, along with specific occupations or application subjects, also takes place. There are 15 technological colleges in England and Wales. The state provides technical expertise in over 200 secondary schools. These schools receive a grant to develop technology education.

Secondary schools should annually provide parents with information on their child's educational achievements. When the school inspector determines that low-level education is provided at any educational institution, local education authorities change the school's self-governance body.

Private schools are registered at the Ministry of Education and operate in an open competitive environment. Approximately 7% of the total number of pupils in the country's approximately 2500 private schools are studying. Private schools are paid for. Pupils from low-income families are provided with scholarships in these educational institutions. Such educational institutions function as complexes that usually include kindergartens, general and secondary schools.

In public schools, teachers appoint a local education authority or a school self-governing body. Teachers' qualifications must be approved by the Ministry of Education. According to the reforms in England and Wales, schools play a more active role in the initial training of teachers. So, schools are closely involved in the practical training of students and their assessment of their level.

The Independent Institution (OFSTED), which sets standards in education, periodically reports to the Ministry of Education about the quality of school education, standards, and the effectiveness of education. Each school is audited by an independent team of inspectors. Parent group members are included in the inspection team together with education specialists. Parents are informed about the results of the audit. According to the final results, school-led institutions prepare prospective plans and inform parents about their future activities.

The UK National Curriculum was adopted in 1992 and students enrolled in public schools are trained on this curriculum by the age of 16. Since 2008, it has been decided to apply National Curriculum for 17 students in 2013 and 18 in 2015. Private schools are not required to apply the National Curriculum.

The National Curriculum focuses on the English language (Welsh language in Wales), mathematics, natural sciences, design and technology, information and communication technology, history, geography, foreign languages, music, art and physical education. In addition, there are also some other compulsory subjects that can be applied to religious subjects.

Northern Ireland also has a similar application. However, schools can incorporate additional elements into the curriculum, taking into account the individual requirements and circumstances of the pupils.

Students who have completed compulsory secondary education are required to take the General Secondary Education Exam. This exam is administered on every subject (about 10) and is evaluated by an independent exam expert. Students who pass the General Secondary Education Exam can successfully complete secondary education or acquire certain qualifications in vocational and technical colleges.

After completing one year of full-time secondary education, students are re-examined to gain the Advanced Subsidiary Level. Students completing their full secondary education attend the A-Level exam, which is considered to be the highest stage for admissions to universities.
